Youth volunteers in Rwamagana District have launched a month-long community service campaign that will see them build seven houses for vulnerable families, renovate homes, construct toilets and kitchen gardens, and rehabilitate community roads.

The campaign was launched in Kigabiro Sector as part of activities marking the month dedicated to promoting and reflecting on Rwandan Unity and Resilience, under the theme: “Learn from our history and strengthen our unity.”

The initiative began with a community work activity in Nyagasenyi Cell, where youth volunteers joined residents and local authorities to rehabilitate a damaged pedestrian road.

“Every Wednesday and Saturday, we will carry out community service activities in schools and communities. These activities will include renovating houses and other initiatives,” she said.

She added that the month-long programme will conclude with a friendly sports match bringing together youth volunteers, the District Administrative Security Support Organ (DASSO) and the Rwanda National Police.

Seven houses planned for vulnerable residents

Eugene Ntaganira, Coordinator of Youth Volunteers in Rwamagana District, said the activities began in Kigabiro Sector and will continue in other sectors before concluding in Muyumbu Sector.

“Together with residents and government institutions, we started in Kigabiro Sector by rehabilitating a road and digging drainage channels. We will conclude the activities in Muyumbu Sector, where we will build a house for a vulnerable resident,” he said.

Ntaganira said the programme includes a range of activities designed to support vulnerable households and improve living conditions.

“We will build houses for vulnerable residents, including seven houses that will be constructed from the foundation. We will also renovate other houses, build five toilets and establish 164 kitchen gardens to help address malnutrition,” he said.

He urged young people and residents across the district to participate actively in the planned activities, describing community service as an important way for citizens to contribute to the development of their communities and the country at large.

District urges residents to preserve national achievements

Rwamagana District Mayor Mbonyumuvunyi Radjab said the month dedicated to Rwandan Unity and Resilience provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s history and draw lessons that can contribute to strengthening unity.

He said discussions will be organized for different groups, including students, young people engaged in various occupations, motorcycle taxi operators, cyclists and construction workers.

“Discussions are planned in schools and among young people involved in different occupations, including motorcycle taxi operators, cyclists and construction workers. We will try to reach all categories so that they can discuss our history as Rwandans,” he said.

According to the Mayor, the discussions will address Rwanda’s difficult history, including the effects of colonialism, while also highlighting positive developments and the progress the country has made.

“We will show them the difficult history we went through, including the effects of colonialism, while also highlighting the positive history and the progress that has been made. We will ask them to preserve the achievements that have been made,” he said.

Mayor Mbonyumuvunyi emphasized that preserving Rwanda’s achievements is a responsibility shared by all generations. He called on adults to play an active role in guiding and engaging young people.

He also encouraged residents to work together and contribute to the country’s development.

“These are activities that should involve everyone. They should not be the responsibility of leaders alone, but of leaders and citizens working together,” he said.

The youth volunteer activities will run from October 1 to October 31, 2026, and will conclude in Muyumbu Sector.
