Criminal record clearance certificate to be issued electronically

Rwanda’s prosecution has announced that citizens are no longer required to visit its offices to seek the criminal record clearance certificate. Anyone can now apply for the certificate via Irembo portal and find it available at their disposal for print out after three days.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Prosecutor General Jean Bosco Mutangana said the change aims to ensure quick service delivery.

“Visiting our offices for that certificate has been challenging many but the service is now offered electronically. Some people have been complaining about this service but we have now solved their concerns,” he told the media in Kigali.

The fee for the certificate remains the same at Rwf1,200.

Mutangana said at least 250 people apply for the criminal record clearance certificate daily including at least 80 who seek it from the headquarters of the National Public Prosecution Authority in Kimihurura Sector of Gasabo District.

The certificate is required to secure many other services including jobs, passports, visas and more.

Statistics from the prosecution indicate that around 67,000 people apply for the criminal record clearance certificate annually.

With 88 public services available online currently, the portal commissioned in 2015 to fast-track service delivery and increase efficiency in public institutions, targets to digitize all Government to Citizen and Government to Businesses services.
