SGF Shares Wildlife Compensation Insights with University of Wisconsin Researchers

On August 19, 2025, the Special Guarantee Fund (SGF) hosted Ms. Allison Fisher and Ms. Meghan Hills, PhD students from the University of Wisconsin, alongside Prof. Antoine Nsabimana from the University of Rwanda (UR/KIST).

The visit focused on SGF’s unique compensation system for victims of animals’ damages, offering valuable insights to support the students’ ongoing research on wildlife conservation and compensation to animals’ victims.

Acting Director General, Mrs. Florence Nibakure, welcomed the delegation and presented SGF’s journey in providing compensation to two categories of victims: those affected by animals’ damages, and those involved in accidents caused by uninsured or unidentified vehicles.

During the discussion, SGF also explained the sources of financing that sustain its compensation schemes. Specifically, 5% of revenues collected from tourism organizations are allocated to animals’ damage compensation, while contributions from insurance companies are directed toward road accident victims caused by unknown and uninsured automobiles.

The PhD students and their supervisor expressed appreciation for the warm reception, the detailed information shared, and the community-oriented services provided by SGF. They also voiced strong interest in exploring potential partnerships with SGF to further their academic project on wildlife and compensation process.
